Statement
Stephanie Brisendine, b. 1991 based in the California Bay Area.
I’m interested in the intersection of memory, color and photography. I transcribe my memories onto the canvas through a rectangle/square format - what I call “frames” - which take up a very limited space on the canvas. Their reduced form mimic real memories, which often feel abridged or condensed. I also like to explore my own biases by exaggerating or retrospectively editing my memories.
“Color can be like my sense of smell. Specific colors or combinations of colors can vividly transport me to a memory. And conversely, my experiences with color influence my future eye… If I’m suddenly drawn to a new color, it’s likely because I’ve recently had a memorable experience with that color in the world.”

“Initially I used the edges of photographs as inspiration as a way to explore my memories. The colors of those edges were always surprising to me. Then I started editing the colors to match my memory - to capture more of the feeling behind the memory, sometimes more symbolic than literal.”
